Trailblazers Academy made it four Regional titled in five years as they booked their place in the National Championships in March 2015 with a strong unbeaten record in the East Midlands Regional Tournament. The Annual British College Tournament is known for its up tempo, blink and it’s over, 10 minute per game format.
Derby started out well beating Bilborough College 27-6 before probably the most exciting game against Moulton College. This game would decide who won the group and it went back and forth before a late burst from the Trailblazers behind a Jacob Wroe offensive flurry led to a 23-17 Derby triumph. The final game saw Derby spank Chesterfield College 40-7 with Ashley Richards in impressive form scoring 15 points in just over six minutes of playing time.
That meant Derby qualified for the final and waiting for them were the tournaments surprise package Wygeston QE. The Leicester based team had knocked off Gateway College (2012 champions) on their way to winning their group.
The final saw Wygeston QE bounce out to an early 4-0 lead and the Derby boys struggled to find their rhythm. Eventually Derby got going as Kayne King and Mitch Nelson connected from the floor and from the line. Wygeston QE stayed in front at 9-8 before a big Jacob Wroe three pointer gave Derby a lead they would not surrender at 11-9. In the end Derby’s full court pressure told and they ran out 20-14 winners.
Teams will now return back to the normal format of the game until March when all regional champions descend on Bath for National Championships which is also played in the shortened style!
